For the purpose of this article, we shall define strategy as \u201c<em>A plan which articulates how a business will grow or defend its market and build required capabilities in order to deliver employee, customer and shareholder value<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Business\nactivities are carried out by people, therefore strategic execution rests on\nthe people (how they behave, their beliefs, their values and their\ncapabilities). We often hear people use the phrase \u201cculture eats strategy for\nbreakfast\u201d which has become the phrase that is used to describe a business\u2019\ninability to achieve its goals. When Peter Drucker made this statement, he was\nattempting to make business leaders aware that you cannot have a strategy\ndiscussion without considering the organisational culture. Often new strategic\ndirection means transformation of the organizational culture at one of the\nbelow levels or all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Business context level (Structure, Systems &amp; Processes, Environment, People Capabilities and Leadership)<\/li><li>Behaviour level <\/li><li>Beliefs &amp; values level<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Without\nconsideration of organizational culture, the strategic planning process is\nincomplete as part of the strategic planning process is defining your value\nproposition i.e. Where? How? Why? And What? It is therefore at the strategic\ndiscussion that the organizational culture is brought into the plan, not as an\nafterthought. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisational\nculture will eat strategy for breakfast if it is not part of the strategic\nplanning process or thought of as a Human Resource officer\u2019s job.
